Tributes have been paid to the president of Saffron Walden Town Football Club, Paul Daw, who has died following a lengthy illness.
Paul served the club for more than 50 years as a player, official, and club secretary, and a testimonial was held in his honour in February to celebrate his dedication to the Bloods.
He also held the position of secretary at Cambridge United FC, and wrote histories about the U’s and Saffron Walden Town.
Brian Wilson, Bloods’ chairman, issued this statement on behalf of the club: “It is with very great sadness that Saffron Walden Town Football Club announces the death of its president, Paul Daw.
“Paul had been unwell for some time and died on Saturday, March 25, while visiting relatives in the Lake District.
“He had been associated with Saffron Walden Town for over 50 years both as a player and official, having been club secretary for many years. At the time of his death Paul was club president and a member of the board. He will be sorely missed by colleagues, players and supporters.
“Saffron Walden Town Football Club sends sincere condolences to wife Marguerite and other family members.”
Paul’s testimonial attracted a 350-strong crowd to Catons Lane last month, raising £4,000 for the club, and a stand, named in his honour, was unveiled.
Spike Bell, the Bloods’ captain, said: “I have played at Saffron Walden Town FC for 16 years and during this time have seen many changes and many people come and go, but there has always been on constant, Paul Daw.
“Whether it was building the stand, attending the grounds, or commentating at the matches, Paul put countless hours into the club. He was the club historian and kept meticulous first team records for over 50 years.
“The day, which included many past and present players, was covered by ITV and included Sir Trevor Brooking in attendance, and was a great tribute to Paul.
“On behalf of all the players, management, club officials and everyone involved in Saffron Walden Town FC, I would like, as club captain, to offer our condolences to Paul’s family at this very sad time. His dedication to, and vast knowledge of, the club will be sorely missed both here at Caton’s Lane, not to mention all other clubs where he regularly attended our away matches.”
