A TEENAGER has overcome his fear of heights and jumped out of a plane from 12,000ft to raise money for charity.

Determined student Tristan Rose, 17, said: "I hate heights, I can't stand fast rides at places like Thorpe Park, but this was personal to me. I wanted to prove that I could achieve something for others."

Tristan took on the skydiving challenge to raise money for the Essex Air Ambulance and has raised 750 towards his 2000 target.

"I wanted to prove that youngsters aren't all about hoodies, ASBOs and intimidation," said Tristan. "Young people like me can bring a benefit to our local society, do good and raise the awareness of what Essex Air Ambulance is all about - saving lives."

In between studying for his A-levels at Newport Free Grammar School, Tristan put himself through a tough eight-session training course so he could complete the solo skydive.

To pay for his training, Tristan has been washing dishes at the local pub and serving behind the counter at Newport Pharmacy.

"I'd like to thank all my friends, family and all those who donated money and who had faith that I would do it," said Tristan. "That's the start of raising 2000 for Essex Air Ambulance - you never know when your life is at stake and you'll need the helicopter to help you."

Communications manager for Essex Air Ambulance Aderyn Gillett said: "We are delighted that Tristan has chosen to raise money for Essex Air Ambulance. It costs around 150,000 per month just to keep the helicopter flying and this is only possible through the generosity of the people of our county. We need more people like Tristan to help."
