The Welding Institute (TWI) at Great Abington, which tests under sea pipes, aircraft and other structures throughout industry and engineering has received £1.75 million to boost its trial facilities.

The funding has been given by the Greater Cambridge and Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) from the Government’s Growth Deal, presented by chairman Mark Reeve. It will enable the organisation to use specialist fabrication and testing equipment.

TWI, will now be able to test larger pipes and components for the companies which rely on the organisation for the latest engineering technology, including oil, gas and power providers to aerospace firms.

Christoph Wiesner, Chief Executive of TWI, said: “We are delighted that the Local Enterprise Partnership is supporting the expansion of our operations. This refurbishment will update a historic laboratory and allow us to offer a complete testing service for new and existing members.”

The money will also ensure that the TWI’s existing building at Granta Park can be modified and refurbished, echoing the recent construction of three new buildings. The deal also includes a programme, which TWI will run for smaller enterprises, offering reviews and advice.

Neil Darwin, chief executive of Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough LEP added: “TWI is one of the world’s foremost independent research and technology organisations, focusing on manufacturing, fabrication and whole-life integrity management technologies.

“This new investment will help it stay at the forefront of technology development through purchasing specialist fabrication and testing equipment and the creation of this cutting-edge facility.

“We look forward to seeing the work getting underway.”
