ONE of the greatest films from the golden age of the silent movie will be screened with live piano accompaniment in Saffron Walden.

Independent cinema Saffron Screen has released its programme for Christmas and the New Year which includes an exciting line-up of films both old and new.

Safety Last (U) is one of the best silent comedies of its era and famous for the image of Harold Lloyd clutching the bending hands of a clock on the side of a skyscraper. This tale of crazy stunts and mishaps cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in early motion pictures.

The film will be screened at 3pm and 8pm on Sunday January 3 and features piano accompaniment by local pianist Gail Ford.

The talented musician will use all of her accompanist and improvisational skills to deliver a live piano performance that will include the expected and the unexpected for this special event.

The screening of Safety Last to end Saffron Screen's season of films follows last year's successful showing of silent movie Steamboat Bill.

These screenings promise to be highly entertaining events and a great alternative to watching yet more television over the Christmas and the New Year break. Fantastic entertainment for all the family.

Other highlights include the opportunity to watch the Christmas classic A Wonderful Life (U) on the big screen and Bright Star (PG), the critically acclaimed British film about the tragic love affair between the young English poet John Keats and feisty fashion student Fanny Browne.

Children of all ages will enjoy Fantastic Mr Fox (PG), a highly original and enjoyable animated adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic novel, and the latest instalment of the Twilight Saga: The New Moon (12A) will provide another intoxicating dose of breathy romance and mild horror.

In addition, for those needing last-minute gift ideas, Saffron Screen Gift Tokens are available to purchase at the Tourist Information Centre on Saffron Walden Market Square and the Box Office.
