THE headline act for the Saffron Walden Carnival 2008 Party Night on Saturday July 5 has been announced.

Town favourites Uncle Funk, a disco and soul tribute band, will lead this year's celebrations at the charity event organised by the Saffron Walden Round Table.

Uncle Funk's lead singer Simonella Funkenfurter said: "For Uncle Funk to be asked back to headline the Carnival Party Night is a real honour for the band, and with 2000 people expected it sounds like a recipe for a proper carnival party."

Uncle Funk will be supported by 70s disco legend and the voice of Rose Royce, Gwen Dickie, whose hits include the classics Car Wash, Wishing on A Star and Love Don't Live Here Anymore.

The carnival will run from Friday July 4 to Saturday July 12 and all the money raised will be given to local charities and good causes.

The big announcement was made in front a sell-out crowd at Uncle Funk's now traditional Big Christmas Disco Party, which took place at The Saffron Walden Town Hall on Saturday December 22.

At the concert the band made a presentation to deputy mayor Mike Hibbs and senior youth worker Jiff Godfrey, of a cheque for £500 for The Saffron Walden Youth Outreach Project.
