Janet Bloomfield spoke at March 29 meeting of the United Nations Association. Mrs Bloomfield is a co-editor and British co-ordinator of Atomic Mirror, an anti-nuclear
organisation. Mrs Bloomfield is a great supporter of NGOs and the work that they carry out in volatile situations.
She explained to the group that Kofi Annan, the UN's secretary general, had always wanted the group to be an international forum, not simply a gathering of governments, and that NGOs were vital to achieving this.
She also stressed that it was important for the UN to resist pressure from the USA to
downgrade the level of access that NGOs benefit from.
