UTTLESFORD District Council has donated 3000 towards a community cinema's campaign to go digital.

Last month Saffron Walden's community cinema, Saffron Screen, launched a campaign to raise 60,000 to enable it to purchase digital projection equipment.

The equipment will mean the cinema - which attracts filmgoers from all over the district and beyond - is able to greatly expand the range of entertainment it can offer, including live broadcasts of cultural and sporting events from around the world.

The district council decided to make its donation at the latest meeting of its community and housing committee.

Chairman of the committee, Cllr Rod Chamberlain, said: "Uttlesford District Council is pleased to be able to support Saffron Screen in its drive to go digital next year.

"Part of the council's role is to support community initiatives, whether through one-off donations like this or through programmes such as our community project grants scheme.

"The digitisation of the cinema's projection equipment will mean it is able to further improve the service it provides to the district, which I know is enjoyed by a great many people."

Chairman of Saffron Screen, Rebecca del Tufo, said: "We are delighted to have Uttlesford District Council's support in our 'Going Digital' campaign.

"As the only cinema in Uttlesford, Saffron Screen aims to provide high quality entertainment and educational experiences, and new digital projection equipment will ensure we continue to do so in the coming years.
