Saffron Walden residents concerned about the impact of overnight roadworks have another chance to get their voices heard – after campaigners forced Essex County Council (ECC) to re-open its public consultation until October 31.

Initially open between June and August, the consultation was virtually unknown – until the installation of traffic lights on Debden Road kept residents awake for consecutive nights with loud drilling, spurring WeAreResident.org members into action.

There are already 38 locations across Uttlesford designated by ECC as ‘traffic sensitive’ – meaning ‘non-emergency’ overnight roadworks can take place there – but a further 133 sites would be affected if the proposal went ahead, including Ashdon Road, Fairycroft Road and South Road in Saffron Walden.

John Lodge, WeAreResidents.org member and county councillor for Saffron Walden said: “Residents have not been properly consulted and these proposals, if accepted, could needlessly disrupt homeowners’ lives.” The consultation runs until October 31.
