The Only Way is Uttlesford – or at least, that was the message last night, when a number of Saffron Walden venues scooped up prizes at the county’s tourism awards.
For the second year running the town’s Tourist Information Centre was recognised for going the extra mile, winning in their category at the Essex Tourism and Hospitality Awards, which were presented at Boreham House in Chelmsford.
Best B&B in Essex was awarded to the Newdegate Bed and Breakfast run by Jacky and John Haigh, and their grand-daughter, who have run the guesthouse in Wimbish for many years.
Last but not least, Audley End Miniature Railway steamed away with the best small attraction award – a tribute to the thousands of fun days out enjoyed on Lord Braybrooke’s woodland ride.
“This is an extraordinary evening for Saffron Walden and has made me extremely proud,” said Mayor Sandra Eden, who attended the event with her husband Cllr Keith Eden.
“The TIC has had an exceptionally busy year and I am delighted that all the efforts of the permanent staff, casuals and volunteers have been recognised with this thoroughly deserved award. I was particularly happy to also see Newdegate win best B&B and that the miniature railway at Audley End were also successful - what a terrific evening,” she said.
