WAITROSE is inviting the public to discuss plans for a multi-million pound extension to its Saffron Walden store.

WAITROSE is inviting the public to discuss plans for a multi-million pound extension to its Saffron Walden store.

The retailer has drawn up a proposal to extend its existing Hill Street supermarket and car park with a brand new food shop and car park facilities.

The scheme would increase the size of the store from 15,820sq ft to 23,095sq ft to provide customers with a bright, contemporary shopping environment and its latest food offer. In addition, a new car park would offer shoppers a significantly improved layout and better access.

Waitrose is keen to speak to the local community in Saffron Walden to gauge feedback on the proposal before progressing any further.

Plans will go on display at 36 High Street in a vacant retail unit opposite the Post Office from 10am-4pm on Friday September 10 and from 9am-4pm on Saturday September 11. Members of the project team will be available on both days to answer questions.

Subject to the feedback received during the consultation, Waitrose aims to submit a planning application in the autumn. If this is successful, it hopes to complete the project by 2012.

Branch manager, Malcolm Domb, said: “The proposed extension is an exciting opportunity for us to build on nearly 25 years of trading in Saffron Walden and would firmly commit our long-term future to the town centre.

“It will not only significantly improve our customer’s shopping experience, but can play an important role in attracting more people to the high street here.

“The local community have an important role to play in shaping our plans and we are looking forward to hearing their feedback so it can be considered as part of the planning application.”
