A FORMER civil servant and a keen cricketer, Saffron Walden's new rector has been bowled over by the warm welcome he has received from the town.

Rev David Tomlinson takes up his post as Team Rector for the Saffron Walden Team Ministry on Sunday September 21.

"We are delighted to be here and very grateful for the warm welcome that we've received," said Rev Tomlinson.

"We look forward to getting to know people, and to all that God has in store in the coming years."

Moving from Grays in South Essex, Rev Tomlinson and his wife Jenny, who is also an ordained priest, and their two daughters have been settling into their new life in Saffron Walden.

A student of theology at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, where he met Jenny, Rev Tomlinson worked in the parish of Godalming, near Guildford, before moving to Grays. He was a vicar and Area Dean of Thurrock for five years.

Rev Tomlinson enjoys playing cricket as frequently as he can for the diocese of Chelmsford.

Through thick and thin, he has supported West Ham Football Club for more than 40 years.

His other interests include cooking, walking, reading and films. Jenny enjoys gardening, reading, and music, especially singing.

The previous rector Rev Canon Duncan Green left Saffron Walden in October 2007 following his appointment as Church of England Co-ordinator for the Olympics and Paralympics for London 2012.

Rev Tomlinson's induction by the Bishop of Colchester Right Rev Christopher Morgan will be at 5pm in St Mary's Parish Church, Saffron Walden. All are welcome.
