Watch scheme gets �5k funding

MONEY is being ploughed into improving the network of "eyes and ears" in the community in a bid to tackle crime.

Essex Police has given �5000 to support the growing influence of Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Uttlesford.

Chf Insp Joe Wrigley said: "Essex Police are actively engaged with Neighbourhood Watch because they are the eyes and ears of the local community. Coordinators can encourage greater awareness, be helpful in preventing crime and assist in detection.

"This funding will help strengthen their efforts and assist in improving coverage across the district."

The funding will be allocated by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) that includes Uttlesford District Council (UDC), Essex Police, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, Essex County Council, West Essex PCT and the probation service.

Chairman of the Uttlesford Neighbourhood Watch Steering Group, Alan Johnson, said: "As a voluntary organisation, we have always recognised the mutual benefits of working with our statutory partners and this funding is a real boost to the tangible support from the police.

"We made a case for spending part of the money to buy a stock of signs and to replenish our membership packs to support new schemes across the district."

Community safety officer at UDC, Yasser Alromisse, said: "The CDRP were impressed by Neighbourhood Watch's contribution to the effort of tackling crime and disorder. Neighbourhood Watch is a key voluntary partner and we will continue to offer our support.

"We look forward to seeing how they make use of the fund and the positive outcome that will bring to our communities."
