As Storm Dylan lashes parts of the UK, we have the latest weather forecast for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day for our region.

It will be a case of pot luck on the stroke of midnight as to whether there will be heavy showers in Suffolk and Essex.

Phil Garner, forecaster at Weatherquest, said there is a band of rain moving in from the west which is set to hit the region at around midnight or 1am.

But it should pass quickly and there will be brighter conditions on New Year’s Day.

Mr Garner said: “Most of the day is staying dry. There could be one or two showers at around 5pm or 6pm but these shouldn’t be heavy. There were strong gusts earlier of around 50mph at Felixstowe but the strong winds have gone now. It should be 15-18mph tonight.
“This evening, it is going to be fine and dry until midnight when showers are moving in from the west. They will not be heavy and will move through quickly. But it might spoil a few plans at midnight. With a little bit of luck, most people will miss it but it is difficult to know exactly where and when the showers are going to be.

“The temperatures this afternoon should be around 10C (50F) and at midnight tonight it could be 4C (39.2F) or 5C (41F).

“There should be a bright start to New Year’s Day with early sunshine. There will be very isolated showers during the day. The bulk of it will be dry with sunny spells. It will be around 7C (44.6F) in the morning with highs of 8C (46.4F) or 9C (48.2F) during the day.

“It is very changeable thereafter. Tuesday will start off fine and sunny but there could be showers in the middle part of the day, but the temperatures will remain the same as New Year’s Day.

“Most of Wednesday will be dry but it could be a windy day with showers in the afternoon.”
