AFTER a last-minute rush of entries, 17 wannabe carnival queens will now compete for a coveted title at a big bash on Friday.

The Saffron Walden Round Table Carnival will crown its queen at the event's opening ceremony being held in a marquee on Saffron Walden Common.

Carnival chairman Eamon McCourt said: "The Carnival Queen Final will be a fantastic event and it is the only night that is especially for families.

"There is a real buzz about this year's competition and it's fantastic we have had so many entries."

A panel of judges will be looking for the best candidate to become the face of the carnival.

The chosen queen will have ceremonial duties including prize giving and leading off the carnival procession on Saturday.

The carnival queen will win £500 cash, £750 worth of holiday vouchers and hair and beauty treatment for the duration of the carnival season.

"As well as finding a queen and her two attendants, we shall also hold a competition to find 'A Mum in a Million'," said Mr McCourt. "Children will have 15 seconds on stage to try and persuade the judges why their mum should claim the prize."

The Mum in a Million will win eight tickets to ladies' night - featuring the Dreamboys and Strike - as well as the use of a limousine to take her and her friends to the event in style.

Tickets for the Carnival Queen Final are selling fast and almost 500 people are expected to attend the event. The final, as well as many of the other carnival events, will be staged in a huge marquee measuring 60 metres by 25 metres.

"It's an amazing venue and the biggest marquee we have ever had in the carnival's history," said Mr McCourt.

A carnival event will be held in the marquee every night next week, starting with the Carnival Queen Final on Friday and finishing with the Final Night Party on Saturday July 12.
