A Wimbish girl has raised £700 for animals at Colchester Zoo to eat their breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Pier Molloy Gregory, 10, was concerned the animals might go hungry when she saw the news about the impact of coronavirus on the zoo’s finances.

Mum Rebecca said Pier wanted to do something.

“She does like walking, she has always loved walking. We have some nice woods around us,” she said.

Pier walked several miles a day, sometimes in the evening as some days were too warm.

Rebecca set up a JustGiving page, and generous family and friends donated funds.

Pier handed the money to the zoo, and staff there surprised her by offering her a visit to see the meerkats. The animals were eating raw carrot and other vegetables.

Pier is about to go back to school on Tuesday to Wimbish Primary, where she will share the story of her fundraiser with her class.
