A 30-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a crash between a car and a van on Newport Road, in Saffron Walden.

Firefighters released the woman from her vehicle using two sets of hydraulic cutting equipment by 1.40pm today (Feb 7) and she was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by land ambulance.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance Service was also called to the scene where the “high-impact” collision took place.

A spokesman for the air ambulance service said: “The helicopter landed in a field next to Newport Road. There were two minor injuries and a third casualty who was trapped in her car. The clinical team was first on the scene and worked closely with fire crews to extricate the patient from the vehicle.

“The doctor and paramedic operated on her chest to help her to breathe and also applied a pelvic splint. The patient, who had also sustained a head injury, was escorted by the helicopter crew to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by road ambulance at 2.03pm. Her condition was described as life threatening on arrival.”
