“O shabti figure, I call upon you to do any work that needs to be done in the afterlife!” Have you ever wanted to just lie back and have someone do all your work for you?
The Ancient Egyptians who were used to that sort of treatment when they were alive wanted to make sure they had the same attendants to take care of them in the afterlife.
Shabti figures were buried with them to carry out menial tasks in the great beyond, and now you can make your own.
Bring some Ancient Egyptian Magic to Half Term this February by creating your very own Shabti figure at the Saffron Walden Museum on Wednesday, February 19, and Thursday, February 20.
Gemma Tully, visitor services and learning officer at the museum, said: “Inspired by our exhibition, Re-Imagining Egypt, which is soon coming to an end, this is a family activity open for all ages, Mummies are welcome and Daddies too!
“Come along and design your own Shabti figure and write a magic spell, which will make your Shabti do all the work that you don’t want to do!*”
The drop-in sessions are at 11am–1pm and 2pm–4pm and there is no need to book. Normal entry fees apply: £1.50 adults, 75p concessions, 18 and under are FREE, although you can of course buy a season ticket for just £5.
