Adrian Fisher will be giving an illustrated lecture on Saturday August 17 in the townhall on his 30 years of designing over 600 mazes in 30 countries all over the world. Saffron Walden Initiative, the festival organisers, say they are “delighted hey’ve managed to persuade him to be the central speaker” at this year’s event.

Mr Fisher started with hedge and turf mazes like the one in Saffron Walden, and now makes mirror mazes, scary mazes, water mazes and mazes out of fencing that resemble wild-west forts, complete with turrets. He has made mazes in maize fields, willow mazes and even a mist maze. He has also made a Yellow Submarine water maze in Liverpool and clad the Maze Tower in Dubai in 600-feet of ‘vertical puzzlement’ but he’s made pop-up portable mazes, both inflatable and with mirrors, to confuse and delight children.

A spokesman for the Initiative said: “We’ll be proud to show him the great variety of mazes made by adults and children all over Saffron Walden and hope he will open our new permanent labyrinth, designed by our own John Ready, in the Jubilee Gardens bandstand.”

Mr Fisher’s talk is free, but seating is limited. Reservations can be made at the Tourist Information Centre in Market Square.
