Budding chefs put their culinary skills to the test at the Rotary Young Chef competition.

Eight students from Joyce Frankland Academy, Saffron Walden County High School and Friends’ School challenged themselves to produce a two-course meal with ingredients costing no more than £10 in the annual competition organised by Saffron Walden Rotary Club.

The winner was Millie Beyon, from Friends’ School. She impressed the judging panel, made up of restauranteur Hassan Shamk, rotary district co-ordinator Peter Senior and Janet Riley, with her chicken and pea risotto and a brandy snap heart filled with cream and berries.

The 13-year-old will now take part in the district final in Ipswich in February.

Competition supporter Waitrose presented a £10 gift card and Burton and Son Butchers gave an apron to each contestant.
