IF UTTLESFORD District Council was really 'green' it would not be behaving in such a petty manner regarding picking up the occasional bit of waste put out by the Scouts.
Concessions ought to be made for Guides, Scouts, Cadets and other charitable youth organisations that rely on subscriptions and volunteers to run their organisations.
Such groups should not have to fund raise extra money to pay UDC for rubbish bags!
However the Government wants councils to improve on domestic waste. There are not the same targets for commercial waste. Why are they excluded?
Likewise schools located in residential streets should be entitled to a brown kitchen waste bin for their compostable waste.
If the waste operators are already collecting from adjacent houses there would be no inconvenience to them to collect from schools they pass by as well.
It would send a positive environmental message to the pupils so they can be proud that they are doing their bit for recycling to.
From talking to the workers running our tip in Thaxted Road the men have noticed a large increase in domestic refuse going into their big skips, as many people don't want to sort their waste so take it to the dump instead.
This ought to be ringing alarm bells with someone.
If UDC really wanted to show its commitment to reducing waste sent to landfill then I challenge them to improve the situation for all those who don't fit into their tight categories and use more common sense when making polices. Lets not wait until next year to sort out all the teething problems regarding waste, get the issues resolved now.
