NOW that Saffron Walden Town Council has decided not to support the purchase and placement of Maggi Hambling's sculpture, The Wave, many of us are greatly relieved that an excellent view of a great perpendicular church will not be interrupted by an inappropriate sculpture.

No doubt my opinion will induce the reaction 'philistine!' but was it not Ms Hambling who on Radio Four once described Gauguin as not much of a painter?

In defence of my own position - as a professional artist for 48 years - who has also taught, moderated, assessed and advised in 14 colleges of art throughout the UK, may I suggest 'The Wave' should now be allowed to recede?
