IT IS depressing to hear that UDC has decided to divest itself of one the major assets in the district, namely the Tourist Information Centre in Saffron Walden.

Anyone who visits or shops in the town will have had cause to make use of this excellent resource at some time or other, whether to purchase local history books or souvenirs, to find out what's on, where they can stay in the area, or just to get help with finding their way around.

The calibre of the staff is of the highest and it would not be easy to re-assemble the brilliant combination of local knowledge and helpfulness that is to be found in this small establishment. Since the closure of Harts this is where most local history books can be browsed and bought, and to lose it will be another nail in the coffin for an interest that is growing daily in the area - to say nothing of the general good.

It is hard to understand the thinking of councillors on this one - whatever the financial situation.
