Your correspondent Mr Lomas (August 17) is right to expect chaos now size as well as weight governs postal charges, but he is wrong to blame it on the EU.

There is an EU Directive which enforces privatisation of postal services (Directive 97/67 amended by Directive 02/39), but it provides there shall be a universal provider so all persons are guaranteed a regular delivery of post.

As regards pricing, charges must be cost led but may not discriminate; charges must be affordable and transparent; services open to competition may not be subsidised from Revenue. No mention of size!

There are anti-EU issues worth debating, but UKIP is insulting our intelligence by silly, inaccurate accusations like Mr Lomas letter on this, or his letters on wheelie bins, or the police in February and July, or, for that matter, the straight cucumber or straight banana story of 10 years ago.
