I have been subjected to a number of attacks in your paper recently relating to an issue with a particular market stall.
The reality is I have nothing against Aaron, the trader concerned, or 'cockneys'. I merely showed him a letter of complaint from a constituent I had received which is a responsibility of mine as a local councillor. All I pointed out to him that as his stall has been moved, he should be mindful of the businesses near to him. If the stall was willing, I imagine the council would look favourably on moving it back to its original pitch which would allow Aaron to continue freely and avoid complaints.
I didn't go there to silence Aaron in particular, I was merely representing a constituent and trying to be helpful.
In terms of the Market Square itself I have been working as part of a task group aiming at improving markets in Saffron Walden.
We are trying to spread it out, make it more attractive and improve the footfall in the town. One of our initiatives was the successful French market held recently. I feel that over the past few years the market has not been given the attention it deserves.
We are now working in partnership with traders and other local authorities to develop a Market Square the whole town can be proud of.
I also fully support Cllr Alastair Walters and the Saffron Walden Initiatives scheme to renovate the Market Square as this will be a huge benefit to the town.
