THE tactic of the LibDems to try to make a deficit of £1.8m on Uttlesford's current account a minor problem, which should have by now been overcome is at very best disingenuous. Whatever the faults of the officers, the council in power is the final seat of responsibility for expenditure, which is something they cannot dodge.

This is not the only sum of money involved for the reserves must also be taken into account as these should have been available to make good this deficit immediately but they have gone.

We are all aware of the published statement 'If reserves are available they should be spent,' which the LibDems seem to have done with a vengeance leaving what was one of the financially strongest councils in the country as a financial wreck.

All in all, for as far as can be gathered, it looks like a sum of £13 million was spent. What have we got to show for it? Where has it gone? The taxpayers deserve to be told.
