I DON'T think Saffron Walden's mayor is talking to the right people.

There are many people I know who would be delighted if Marks and Spencer opened here (Reporter, March 8).

I don't know how long Hilary Shibata has been in the town, but many people remember proper shops which we needed, not the endless restaurants, gift shops, hairdressers and charity shops we have now.

I'm sure if a shop census of the Saffron Walden population was taken, the over-50s would dominate.

And it's time they were catered for, not tourists or casual visitors, but the people who live in the town with the money to be spent, if only there was somewhere to spend it.

I hope people will answer the questionnaires - it's already a ghost town as far as I'm concerned.
