MOST retailers must surely agree with their fellow trader who wrote a letter in last week's Reporter ('Don't mess with Market Square').

Tuesdays and Saturdays are the only two days the town wakes up and looks anything like busy.

It does not take a rocket scientist to work out that the markets are an attraction and undoubtedly a great asset to the town.

The experience of many other towns has been that if you move a retail market, even for a short period, it dies. If a 'draw' is not in the usual place people very quickly get into the habit of going elsewhere and it takes a long time before they come back. Hopefully the new retailers moving into Saffron Walden will help to bring the town centre back to life, but it will take both they and the two market days to give any hope of bringing the town back to its former glory.
