THERE have been some critical comments made in last week's local newspapers concerning the proposed enhancement scheme for Market Square, orchestrated by mischief-making LibDems, whose record of creativity and achievement can be best judged by the horrendous financial crisis they created at Uttlesford District Council during their unhappy four year term of administration.

The Market Square (Place) enhancement scheme, which has been professionally designed by talented local architect, John Ready, has been approved by the town council and by Essex County Council Highways, who are providing all the funding.

It will be completed in the early part of next year in spite of all the sour grapes from LibDems, who are still bewildered and smarting, following their massive rejection by the electorate in the 2007 local elections.

Disappointingly, market trader and former LibDem Town Councillor, Steve McDermott, has decided to go off half cocked with his negative and myopic criticism of the scheme, which will provide a long overdue enhancement to the surface of Market Square.

In spite of his obvious attraction to asphalt, I can only hope he will calm down in due course and refocus on working constructively with the town council, other market traders and town centre businesses, to determine well in advance the most effective way to operate market days during the challenging two to three month period it will take to complete the scheme.

As soon as the fine detail of engineering and design of the enhancement scheme have been concluded, the town council will no doubt be in full consultation with all those concerned at the earliest opportunity. So keep your cool Steve, you may be very pleasantly surprised.
