SAFFRON Walden residents may feel outraged at being represented by morally retarded councillors who have decided to allow performing circus animals on their land (Reporter, September 18, 'Circus can bring its animals').

Cruelty is morally repugnant even when sanctioned by law. Bull baiting and cock fighting were once legal and no doubt Saffron Walden councillors would have had the same mindset as they have now over the suffering of circus animals - legally sanctioned - so it should continue.

Advocates for animals are in the tradition of pioneers who opposed slavery and all institutions and individuals who harm sentient beings.

Saffron Walden councillors have behaved shamefully. History will judge them when enlightened views prevail.
