I refer to the letter in the Reporter dated January 25 from Howard Rolfe, suggesting that the LibDems are divided in their opinion about switching off street lights.

Perhaps he is unaware that Stansted Parish Council, Thaxted, Dunmow and Saffron Walden Town Councils collectively sought counsel's opinion about the legality of turning off lights and asked Uttlesford District Council to instigate a Judicial Review of the proposal.

Quite a few members of these councils are Conservative.

They are as concerned as the Liberal Democrats are that the decision to turn off the lights has been made by Essex County Cllr Rodney Bass without sufficient consultation.

On the other hand, LibDem-controlled Devon County

Council is consulting about turning off street lights and will make a decision based on the results of that consultation.

This idea of consultation seems to be a concept that is completely alien to Essex County Council.
