WHEN the lights come on again all over the world" - those are the lyrics of the song that was sung by our World War Two forces' sweetheart Vera Lynn.

My generation fought and died to ensure that the lights came on again in 1945.

Now Essex County Council wants to plunge our rural community into darkness by turning off the street-lighting from midnight until 5am. Furthermore, the moon and the stars can still be seen in the sky despite Councillor Jan Menell's letter in the Reporter issue dated August 17.
