WaldenTRI's home event proved to be as big a success as normal - attracting all kinds of competitors to the start.

The Saffron Walden-based triathlon club held their event around the Lord Butler Leisure Centre with 180 individuals and nine relay teams involved.

They had the choice of two events - the sprint, which comprised a 400m swim, a 23km cycle and a 5km run, and the super-sprint covering half the distance.

And with spectators cheering the competitors all the way round, the sprint races were won by Victoria Duncan of Royal Engineer Triathlon in 1:11:41, with the male winner James Surmon of Army Triathlon Association.

He completed the course in 1:04:00 to win the open event.

The relay was hotly contested, with Saffron Walden teams all claiming a win.

The Walden Experience claimed the overall win with a time of 1:00:30 while the mixed relay was claimed by Team Pottrill-Holland Property Agents in 1:13:27.

Female relay winners were Team Yak Yak Gin in 1:35:48.

In the super sprint race, Isobel Lingley of WaldenJNR) won the female race in 44:40 with StortordTRI's George Grimwood clocking 43:07 in the open category.

A spokesman for the club said: "As part of the event, competitors kindly donated £387 to Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), a cause close to our hearts, which we will match to bring the total up to £744.

"In the autumn of 2022 one of our much-loved, long-standing members, George Peasgood, was involved in a freak cycling accident.

"We are all immensely thankful to the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at Addenbrooke’s Hospital who, together with the incredible emergency services, helped to save his life.

"This is our way of saying thank you."

The club also thanked those who made the event possible, such as the marshals for giving up their time, the Walden residents for being patient on the roads, and sponsors Saffron Autos, Greenwood Financial Planning, Pottrill Holland Property Agents, and Newdales, as well as Lord Butler Leisure Centre.
