Saffron Walden Rugby Club are bringing back a women's team as they look to expand their roster of teams.

It has been almost a quarter of a century since the Henham-based club ran a senior female side and officials say it is long overdue.

The women's team will launch in January alongside a new girls’ U13 side.

Club president Kevin Moll said: "It's been more than 25 years since the club had a women's team, and girls who play mini rugby had to stop playing for us at U12.

"It was a key goal of the club to rectify this."

There are plenty of other opportunities to play at the club too, from ages five and upwards, as well as off the field roles such as coaching and volunteering.

And Walden want the community to get involved, whether they are a rugby veteran or new to the sport.

Moll added: "There are lots of opportunities to join our welcoming, community rugby club as a player, coach or volunteer, or perhaps you just want to come down and cheer on our teams.

"This season we have our men's first team in action in Regional Two Anglia after last season's incredible, unbeaten promotion-winning campaign, and our men's second team, known as the Saxons, are back in league competition.

"And of course, we have our burgeoning youth sections so we are keen to hear from anyone who wants to get involved in the sport and support their local rugby club."

Men's training is held at the club's Tiny Curtis Ground in Springate at 7pm on both Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Youth rugby takes place at the club on Sunday mornings.
