SAFFRON Walden's scratch team need two points in their final game of the season to guarantee CAGU division one survival following a crushing defeat at newly-crowned champions Abbotsley last week.

Abbotsley beat Walden 5-1 at the Windmill Hill club and with other results going their way – Gog Magog lost 4-2 away at Elton Furze and Brampton Park beat Ely 5-1 – sealed the title.

It was a disappointing result for Walden who were hit by captain’s Richard Southall late withdraw owing to ill health.

This meant juggling the pairings around and out first Olly Tuck and Daniel van der Westhuizen managed a half with Armatige and Loveday. The Walden pairing were unlucky being 1up going into the18th hole only to be thwarted with the Abbotsley pairing making a birdie at the last to seal a vital point.

The second Walden pairing of Rob Booth and Cam Brown were out of sorts and lost 3down to Osbourne and Hawkins.

Finally, Walden’s Graham Goodman and James Goodfellow lost 3down in a game they should of won. Goodman’s putting deserted him which let the Abbotsley pairing of Redman and Dobson in.

Walden now need to take two points in their last game away at Brampton Park to be sure of survival next year, and not have to depend on other games to go their way.
