Saffron Striders Athletics Club had plenty to cheer at the Essex Veterans five-mile cross-country race on Saturday.

Marianne Naylor (seventh, 33.51), Rebecca White (ninth, 34.10), Fiona Halls (10th, 34.24) and Steph Godfrey (14th, 35.19) joined forces at Writtle College and combined to good effect to walk off with team gold.

And their success came after Halls had finished second in the Cross-Country League at Bishop’s Stortford.

Halls covered the 4.75-mile course in 33 minutes 49 seconds to finish second in the F35 age group, while Fliss Tournant was third overall and first senior in 34.18.

June Brennan was first in the F55 category after coming home in a time of 41.40, while second-claim athlete Matt Dickinson finished third in the men’s race, with Andrew Mynott the first M40 athlete in fourth place.

Bryn Reynolds, another second-claim athlete, was fifth, with Nick White (eighth) also inside the top 10.
