Athletics: Saffron Walden girl storms home at Essex Championships

A Saffron Walden pupil has been crowned Essex Schools Athletic Champion after a stunning performance at Chelmsford.

After qualifying at the North West Essex trials at the beginning of May in Braintree, Friends’ School student Hannah Irwin competed at the Essex Schools event on Saturday at Melbourne Park, winning the inter-girls 1,500m in a personal best time of 4mins 56secs.

Hannah, who is in Year 11 and is trained by Olympic torchbearer Clare Thompson, ran a mature race, staying with the break-away group throughout the race, and attacking with just 150m to go. She moved away from the rest of the athletes to cross the finish line in first place and become Essex champion.

Meanwhile, Skye Wicks, a Year 7 student at Friends’ also qualified to compete in Chelmsford. Running in the 100m she qualified for the final after a solid performance to finish 2nd in her heat. Skye came in 5th place in the very competitive and close 100m final.

Jenny Allwood, head of girls’ sport at Friends’ School, said: “There was some fierce competition at this event, but the girls kept their nerve and ran brilliantly.

“Both Hannah and Skye should be delighted with their performances; we are so proud of them both.”
