TOM Blomqvist signed off from the F3 German Cup in style as he notched up two more pole to flag victories to continue his exemplary end of season form.
The 18-year-old Saffron Walden racer took the chequered flag in race one and three at the famous Nurburgring circuit – rounding off another impressive weekend marred only by a spectacular crash which saw him taken out of the sprint event by championship leader Jimmy Eriksson.
It took his series tally to five victories from 15 races, good enough for 5th in the championship as the other drivers head to the finale at Hockenheim in just over a week’s time.
Blomqvist won’t be there as he is back racing for his ma-con Motorsport team in the F3 EuroSeries championship but nevertheless he was pleased with his latest performance at the iconic German venue.
“All in all, I’m happy with the weekend’s results and it’s great to go out on top,” he said. “The team did a great job and together we got the results.
“Going into qualifying, I was full of confidence from the pace shown in practice and I knew pole was within reach, all I had to do was get it together and get some good laps in.”
Those laps came on his second set of tyres, as he secured pole for races one and three with the two fastest laps.
Blomqvist got off to a slow start in an uneventful opening race before gradually eeking out a lead of just over six seconds to cross the line first.
The reverse grid event was the exact opposite. Starting from 8th, the EuroInternational racer was poor off the line once again and was passed by three cars on the run down to turn 1.
Although he got those places back almost immediately, Blomqvist’s race was over before it had really began when he was collected by Eriksson’s flying car while trying to go round the outside of two opponents at turn 3.
But the 18-year-old ensured he ended his final appearance in the F3 German Cup on a high by winning the feature race in style – suffering only a minor blip when his tyres began to go off with six laps to go.
Up next, Blomqvist is racing in the penultimate round of the F3 EuroSeries in Valencia in just over a week’s time.
