WALDEN’S Owen Lake is the 2011 Eastern Counties senior champion after finishing eighth in a dramatic final race.

Lake, who rides for Cambridge Cycling Club, sealed the title in a 120km road event around his home town and the surrounding villages, starting from the County High School, and finishing in Littlebury.

It started well with some aggressive racing from the start, but Lake suffered a puncture only 15km in and subsequently spent 25km chasing back to the bunch.

After a few attacks seven riders got ahead in a breakaway bid, Lake decided to wait in the chasing group for his chance, which actually came right at the end.

He said: “The course finishes on a one-mile climb and I went up it in 4th place. Coming up the climb the pace was quite high, although everyone seemed to be waiting, not willing to risk attacking. So the main bunch were still together as we neared the finish.”

With 250m to go, Lake took his opportunity, coming from 4th to sprint round the two remaining riders with 100m left, to win the bunch sprint for 8th place and the ECCA Championship by two bike lengths. He had previously won the Junior Championship in 2009.
