SAFFRON Walden pedal power took to the podium at the weekend as Owen Lake produced a great performance in Sunday’s Crest Road Race, finishing second.

This season-starting 115km race held on roads near to the town is considered one of the most difficult races in the eastern league road race calendar.

After an early group breakaway from the main field, 18-year-old Cambridge Cycling Club rider Lake, and Jamie Caldwell from St Ives CC, attacked and bridged a gap.

10km later the duo broke away from the leading group and stayed ahead for the rest of the race, establishing a lead of over a minute before the finish line.
