George Peasgood held off steep competition to take the silver medal at the Detroit ITU World Paratriathlon Event.

The Saffron Walden athlete was beaten by American Chris Hammer to the gold but did superbly to hold off the challenge of José Abraham Estrada Sierra of Mexico in the 5km run, Peasgood’s weakest discipline.

The race started in Belle Isle State Park with a 750m open water swim and Peasgood put in a flawless performance to exit the lake in first place in a time of nine minutes 22 seconds.

He maintained his lead in the 20km cycle, which consisted three laps on fast, closed roads. Hammer overtook him in the run to win the race by 1:12 from Peasgood, who crossed the line in 58:10.

The result saw Peasgood gain valuable world ranking points. He currently sits 13th in the world, 26.66 points behind France’s Maxime Maurel,
