East Anglian Premier League
Clacton-on-Sea CC 126 all out
Saffron Walden CC 127 for 4
(Walden win by six wickets)
FOUR wickets from new overseas signing Jacob Rodgers helped Walden to fire out Clacton for 126 on the opening day of the season at the Anglo American Playing Fields.
The Australian led the attack just days after landing on Tuesday afternoon and was ably assisted by home-grown youngster Joe Barrs (2-35) and the ever-green Tim Smith (3-9).
Rodgers (4-41) helped set the platform for a comfortable win and the stage was keenly taken by classy number three Giles Ecclestone who notched an unbeaten 53 from 82 balls, including nine fours, to see his side home.
Walden skipper Neil Gladwin will be happy to see his overseas player make an impact already. He had no hesitation in putting the visitors in after winning the toss.
The teenage pace-man, who is rumoured to be capable of hitting the 80-55mph mark with the ball, struck early on, as did Barrs and Smith, and Clacton were left reeling at 88 for nine.
Only a last wicket stand of 38 between Martyn Cull (44) and Ryan Chamberlin (18 not out) saw the away side pass the 100 mark.
In reply Walden were reduced to 57 for three, but Ecclestone and Simon Parmenter (11) put on 53 to steady the ship and victory was assured.
The winning start backs up comments made by Galdwin who thinks his squad will have what it takes to win the league this year. Last years champions Cambridge Granta also suffered a dismal 166-run defeat at Horsford.
Granta were bowled out for 79 chasing 245 – Luke Caswell (79), Daniel Clark (52) and Chris Spenceley (48) did the damage to the champions.
