IDEAL golfing conditions saw Saffron Walden’s Jaine Fieldhouse win the Bowen Cup in a traditional fixture against Royston.

The match was away at Royston, known as a difficult course, and Fieldhouse’s winning nett 67 saw her well clear of the rest of the field.

Despite having two 8s on her card, steady play, birdies on the 7th and 9th, and five pars saw her beat off the home challenge. Fieldhouse was delighted with her game. She said: “I played the course well, finding the right position on difficult holes. And had some good luck helped, of course.”

However, Fieldhouse’s splendid round wasn’t enough to prevent Royston from securing the Dorothy Johnson Team Trophy, awarded to the club with the best eight medal scores.

• Saffron Walden ladies team will be contesting the semi-final of the county Jean Wilkinson trophy against St Ives at Hayden Grange on Thursday. The final will also be played today.
