Golf: Saffron Walden scratch team tee CAGU season off with draw at Links

Saffron Walden Golf Club scratch team got their CAGU Division 1 campaign off to a decent start with a deserved 3-3 draw away at Links GC, Newmarket.
Olly Tuck and Mark Reeve started off against Crisp and Bowers. With the first few holes being won by each side, the Walden pairing were then blown by their Newmarket counterparts who hit four birdies in the remaining holes. With Crisp’s immense driving and putting, Tuck and Reeve lost 6-down.
Through nine holes of each of the matches it looked as though Walden could be heading for a 6-0 drubbing, but the final Walden pairings produced impressive golf.
Firstly Richard Southall and Cam Brown showed their experience against Hartley and McQueen. After being 2-down through 10 they then won the 11th and 12th holes to make it all square. They then fell 1-down with a Hartley birdie at 15 but won 16 to a par, before Southall produced one of the shots of the round with a deft chip to three foot to save par at 17.
The Newmarket pairing could only manage a bogey so Walden went into the 18th 1-up. They won 18 to win by two holes.
In the final pairing, James Goodfellow and Ian Macdonald found themselves in a closely fought battle with Parsons and McAllister. Goodfellow was on his game, and with Macdonald’s chipping and putting, they were 1-up going into the last. Unfortunately, Macdonald’s drive found the out of bounds and a big drive and good pitch by the Newmarket pair meant the game was halved.
Walden scratch team captain Graham Goodman though, was pleased with the outcome. “The boys fought hard to gain a draw away from home, which was a good start,” he said.
“We now have four home games in a row and with home fixtures a big advantage, we have to make them count.”
