The first major county gold competition of the season got underway in blustery conditions at St Neots, where Tabitha Brain produced a solid gross round of 78 to retain the Margery Newport Trophy.

Rosemary Farrow was second after a gross 82, but took top spot in the nett competition (73).

Lynn Lambert was in second place with 75, as Mary Thompson took third with 76 on countback.

Short, sharp showers dogged the afternoon foursomes, but the young pairing of Ella Mason and Laura Tuttle secured a hard-fought victory with 32 points.

Lesley Gilchrist and Sarah Jones (31) were second, with Cindy McIntyre and Yve Bishop (30) third on countback from Pat Nixon and Christine Ratcliffe.
