Archant

Saffron Walden’s women beat Ely 10-4 in their first match of the Jean Wilkinson Trophy.

They had to overcome some slow starts, with Lynda Minton rallying from three down to win two up.

Jaine Fieldhouse was five down on the ninth, but then won five holes in a row to finish with a half, while Caroline Peat lost her first six holes, then won three.

Wins on the 13th, 14th and 15th saw Peat square her match and she combined excellent tee shots with accuracy around the greens to win the last two holes and walk off the 18th with a two up victory.

Alex Sparrow, Deb Bowler, Paula Munns and Sue Ward all played their part in a fine result as Walden won four and drew two of the seven matches on the day.
