Cam Brown and Richard Southall powered the Saffron Walden Golf Club scratch team to a hard-fought 4-2 away victory over fellow title contenders Brampton Park.
All the games went to the wire.
Graham Goodman and Tom Duggan went out first against Reeson and Milburn. After halving the first with a six, the game the match settled down. Brampton went 2-up going into 12 but Walden fought back to be all square through 15. At the par five Brampton took a 1-up lead and then won the 16th with a par. Duggan hit a pin-seeking iron to set up a birdie on 17 to bring it back to 1-up.
They halved the 18th so Brampton won 1-up.
Up stepped Brown and Southall to take on Cousins and Robinson and deliver a hard-fought win.
They were 1-down going through 12 but three birdies in a row got them to 2-up. Brampton won 17 and it was left for Brown to hole a 4ft par putt to seal the win for Walden.
The marquee pairing of Olly Tuck and Mark Reeve took on Lockert and Baker in what turned out to be a high class match. Holes were traded as Walden hit birdies at the 4th and 16th only for Brampton to fight back.
Walden reached the 18th 1-up. Reeve hit a monster drive leaving Tuck with a wedge to the green but got a flyer from the wet fairway and over shot the green.
Reeve then played what could be a season0defining moment with a chip to 3ft. Brampton putted for a par and Tuck duely holed for a par to bring home the win.
The victory leaves Walden with a five-point cushion at the top and with a superior points up total in the chase for the CAGU Division 1 title.
Scratch team captain Goodman said: “We were tactically brilliant but it was a fought hard victory. We now have two games to go against Gog Magog and Girton which will be tough seeing they are fighting relegation. So there is everything to play for.”
