SAFFRON Walden Golf Club’s scratch team beat Abbotsley on the third playoff hole in a seesaw first round of Cambridgeshire’s premier golf team competition – the Goddard Cup.

The star of the show for the Windmill club on Sunday was Daniel van der Westhuizen who overcame Abbotsley’s Redman on the third playoff hole in what was a tense battle throughout.

The morning foursomes were halved 2-2 with victories for Walden from the pairings of van der Westhuizen/Tom Duggan and Graham Goodman/James Goodfellow.

The singles during the afternoon were tight with Abbotsley taking first blood when Loveday beat van der Westhuizen. Duggan and Tuck put Walden back on track with respective victories but Abbotsley then forged ahead with Dobson and Osbourne beating Ian Macdonald and Cam Brown.

Rob Booth managed to put Walden back on level terms with a hard fought victory but Abbotsley’s Redman again put his team in front with victory over James Goodfellow. Anchor man Graham Goodman was left to secure a victory which would put Walden into a play off position. He duely delivered.

So, van der Westhuizen and Redman then set off into the sunset on a sudden death playoff. On the first hole Westhuizen holed a 15ft par putt to half the hole after a pushed drive. The second hole was halved.

On the par 5 third playoff hole, Westhuizen pushed his drive which amazingly stayed in bounds by two feet whilst Redman made a solid drive up the middle.Westhuizen chipped out whilst Redman’s 3 wood found the trees on the left. Westhuizen’s third shot fell just short of the green and Redman could only chip out of the trees.

Westhuizen then produced a superb wedge shot under pressure to finish 1ft from the hole and save a par 5 whilst Redman could only achieve a 6.

This victory puts Walden into the second round with an away fixture against either Ramsey or Bourn.
