SAFFRON WALDEN kicked off the season with a loss in the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union first Divison

SAFFRON WALDEN kicked off the season with a loss in the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union first Divison away at Ely last week.

The team, after beating Abbotsley in a nail-biting match the previous week were involved in another tense fixture.

Walden’s top pairing of Tom Duggan and Daniel van der Westhuizen halved their match after being four down after five holes. Three consecutive birdies drew them close and they turned the game around to be 1up after 17 holes.

However, a pushed iron out of bounds from Westhuizen after a good drive from Duggan saw them lose the hole and hence draw their game.

Captain Richard Southall and Olly Tuck then lost on the 18th before Graham Goodman and Cameron Brown followed suit and lost 1down also on the 18th

Goodman said:“What could have been a 6-0 victory on the 18th tee turned into an unlucky 5-1 loss”.
