Stef Mayle hit a hat-trick in Walden's win over Bury St Edmunds.

A Stef Mayle hat-trick and Katherine Langridge brace helped Walden to a 5-1 defeat of Bury St Edmunds.

Walden did the damage during a strong first half performance, putting four past the most miserly defence in the league.

Langridge opened the scoring with a direct short corner strike, Mayle then doubled the advantage in the same fashion before Bury got a goal back.

Undeterred, Walden continued with their short passing game, playing the ball out of defence using the width and then took a more direct route in the offensive half.

For the third goal, Kate Robinson came in off her flank to receive a midfield pass and then accurately thread the ball into the D for Langridge to run onto and score easily.

From a counter attack, Bury conceded another short and Walden made it three out of three as Mayle deflected in an Emma Deary pass.

Bury put up stiffer resistance in the second half and Walden could only add one more their tally, Mayle smashing into the corner from the edge of the D to make it five.

Walden were under the cosh for the remainder of the game but, with some regular defenders missing, Walden’s new look back three made some timely tackles and interceptions to hold firm.

The win ensures Walden go into the Christmas break with a two point advantage at the top of the league and the best goal difference.
