Hockey: Saffron Walden 2s put eight past Clacton to win promotion
PUBLISHED: 12:57 25 March 2014
Saffron Walden men’s 2s followed in the footsteps of the first team and secured promotion. The team recorded an 8-1 victory over Clacton on the final day of the season to move up to their highest ever level – Division 2 – and a second promotion in three years.
Going into the game needing a victory, Walden were fired up from the start, and any pre-match nerves were soon settled as they went 1-0 ahead after a good finish from a tight angle from Toby Watson.
Despite a weakened Clacton team still giving everything, Walden looked to move the ball rapidly across the pitch and catch Clacton on the break, and were rewarded with a brace of goals each from Josh Totty and Tom Crump to leave Walden 5-0 up at half time.
With the hard work done in the first half, Walden were able to relax and enjoy the match as further goals were added by Mathias Swerdlow, Toby Watson and Gary Foster.
Walden were perhaps guilty of taking their foot off the pedal as the half continued, although the Clacton goalie was also in good form to pull off a number of fine saves to keep the score down, and Clacton scored a late consolation.
In the end, it was a comfortable victory with something left in the tank to spare, but a fitting end to what has been a great season for the team and Walden generally.
